Our general surgery department treats diseases of the abdomen, digestive system, breast, thyroid and abdominal wall. Most procedures are performed laparoscopically (keyhole surgery), which means less pain, a shorter hospital stay and a faster return to normal life.
Conditions we assess
- Abdominal pain, particularly starting in the right lower abdomen (possible appendicitis)
- Right upper abdominal pain and nausea after fatty food (gallstones)
- Swelling in the groin or navel that becomes prominent on coughing (hernia)
- Heartburn and acid regurgitation (reflux)
- Difficulty swallowing, loss of appetite, unexplained weight loss
- Change in bowel habit, blood in the stool
- Anal pain, bleeding or swelling (haemorrhoids, fissure, fistula)
- Pain and discharge at the tailbone (pilonidal sinus)
- A breast lump or nipple discharge
- Neck swelling, goitre, thyroid nodule
- A growing skin lump, sebaceous cyst, a wound that will not heal
- Ingrown toenail
Endoscopy and colonoscopy are performed in the same unit, so that diagnosis and treatment are not separated by weeks of waiting.
